End Of The World

The date 21st December 2012 is believed to mark the end of the world. It is believed that on this date some destructive events will take place which will destroy life on earth. The Bible scriptures say that there will be a war in the middle-east and this war will cause huge destruction. The scriptures also say that something will happen that will cause the flesh to melt and bones to burn. This can be inferred to be referring to a holocaust due to a nuclear bomb. In the Book of revelations it is written that 'the mountains will become valleys and valleys will become mountains, and conditions of severe cold and utter starvation will prevail, there will not be any shelter'. This can be also understood as pointing towards the destruction which will cause the end of the world.

The date 21st December 2012 is supposed to mark the end of a cycle as in the Mesoamerican long count calendar. This cycle is said to be a 5125 year long cycle. Some people have different interpretations of the date and say that this date will mark the beginning of physical and spiritual transformation in earth and its inhabitants. Those who believe that 21st December 2012 will be the end of the world support many doomsday theories. One of the popular theories is that a planet called planet X (Niburu) will collide with the earth and will destroy the earth. This will cause the end of the world. Originally this event was predicted to occur in 2003. But it did not take place in 2003 and so was ignored. By the year 2012 the activity of the sun is predicted to increase manifolds. This will happen because the increase in sunspots and this will cause tremendous rise in the surface temperature of earth. This is believed to cause destruction of all life forms on Earth. Also, the end of the world has been predicted by Nostradamus who was a very popular clairvoyant. He has made many predictions and many of them have been proven to be correct.

In the recent past the number of catastrophes has increased. Earthquakes have become very common and frequent. There are famines and droughts all over the world. The magnetic poles of earth are shifting continuously. This shifting of magnetic poles is causing severe changes in climatic conditions. The temperatures are becoming extreme. The shift is also causing the melting of ice caps which in turn is raising the sea level. The melting of ice caps is generally attributed to only global warming but it is also caused by shifting magnetic poles. The magma activity has also enhanced because of the shifting of magnetic poles and this increase in magma activity is causing random tectonic plates movement which is increasing the frequency of earthquakes. Earthquakes cause mass destruction of life and property.

But the other interpretation of the date i.e. to be the beginning of spiritual and physical transformation is also very strong. According to an Indian Guru, Guru Kalki Bhagavan who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu the date will mark the end of Kal Yug and human race will be enlightened.

Inflation and the Economic Crisis

Hopefully, you're not in the category of non believers thinking the government will save you. Doing your best pretending the day of reckoning is never going to come upon your doorstep, regardless of all the evidence you might have heard or read about. Regardless what level of defiance you carry around with you history will always be on the side of the truth. There is no prejudice here that will enter the equation regardless of what you think you would be entitled to. If I am sounding a little pessimistic, then I am making my point. There is nothing that will keep this economic crisis from coming and there is too much hard evidence and monetary history surrounding this to look the other way.

Some facts which are not open for any analyzing or debate.

• Fiat Currency - this is currency that is backed by the good faith of the government that issues it. It has no real or tangible value. It is printed "out of thin air"

• All national currencies are fiat currency.

• A universal example of a non-fiat currency. Gold and Silver are real money. Governments are incapable of creating this kind of money out of thin air. Gold and silver cannot be granted a "value" and then suddenly have that value removed or reduced by any action government or otherwise.

• The last "Real Money "in the United States was from 1944 -1971. When the US. Dollar was backed by 10% gold. In 1971 President Nixon signed an Executive Order that suspended the Bretton Woods Agreement that took the US. Dollar off the gold standard up to this day.

• Fiat currencies have a 100% failure rate throughout history. 11th century China was the first country to use and issue fiat currency.

All national currencies including the dollar, yen, euro, and pound are all fiat currencies. And remember, this subject cannot be analyzed or debated upon: Every single fiat currency that has ever been created throughout history wound up eventually being mismanaged and destroyed by world governments that created and controlled it.

Why it is that fiat currency has a 100% failure rate?

All through history world governments have been unable to maintain their currencies. There have always been two sides to any government constantly driving an escalating and tumbling dynamic. With this you have those who don't want taxes or new taxes and on the other side you have those who want the government to give you everything for free.

In theory a sensible government might actually tell the truth to their citizens. Letting them understand that taxes are the price of evolution and progress and we are not in any business of handing out free meals. However the reality of governments is fat cat politicians enjoy living the high life on tax payer money. So no way would they turn sensible.

So consequently for the elected government politicians only one choice really exists. Lie to everyone, promise the moon and borrow into tomorrow so your kids and grand kids get stuck with all the bills. Believe it or not after enough time has passed people actually start to believe this is normal and nothing out of the ordinary is really wrong because they see businesses growing, taxes level off or drop and government hand-outs given to all.

The big problem with the economic crisis is governments having to borrow their way into financing their massive spending habits while not allowing taxes to increase enough to pay for new programs creates deficits. It is easy when you "Own" the printing presses, by flipping the "ON" switch you can generate all the "Money" that would ever be needed to satisfy any and all debts and obligations. The Federal Reserve purchases US debt from the US Treasury in the form of bonds, then they lend out the money to the markets with a simple push of a button from a computer. Then Bam that money is now in the money supply.

We have two groups, those opposing taxes along with those in favor of spending getting what they want year after year while little ever gets noticed, at least not right away. But there is a small reduction in value of the currency which was caused by the rising supply demand. All things being what they are all governments will in time choose the second course which with very few exceptions creates a continuing loss of confidence in every national currency. This is called inflation.

Inflation can be like a drug over time the space in between tax and revenue grows just as dependency on that drug grows over time using it. While spending, borrowing and generating more currency demands grow interest rates begin to increase.

This causes inflation to speed up eventually causing the process of currency debasement or the annihilation of people's savings. The currency is then abandoned by all, who at the same time are trying to spend it or convert it into more secure forms of money as quick as then can. This situation causes the value of the currency to plummet while driving up costs for even the most basic items such as milk, eggs, bread and sugar to skyrocket. As this happens the savings of an entire generation can be destroyed. Thus the fate of all fiat currencies.

Here at this point is where you stand now. Each year, each decade you have noticed the purchasing power of your currency keep buying you less and less. The reality for people in the United States is they have been living in a hyperinflation society ever since President Nixon took the dollar of the gold standard in 1971 killing our money and changing it into fiat currency. Since the dollar was taken off the gold standard the dollar has actually lost 80% of its purchasing power. Remember the dollar is not money it has no value, the only thing the dollar has is a pre determined fate.

What has value is gold and silver. Which have been used since man left the cave. Throughout history gold and silver have always been a storage of true value. One 1 ounce gold coin back in the Roman Empire would have been able to buy food for a small family for about 2 months. That same one ounce gold coin today can still by a small family food for about 2 months. During these insane economic times buying physical gold and silver are your best chance to ride out the economic crisis and come out on top. "Cash is Trash" a quote from Robert Kiyosaki. Don't save it as it has no value, owning hard assets is the key.

is the End in 2012 True?

Are you wondering if the end in 2012 true? Will the world crumble to the seas; buildings falling, mountains rumbling, oceans then overflowing into the cities? Whatever the predictions for the year 2012, people are fascinated by the idea of a doomsday or Armageddon happening in our lifetime - and if anything can be done to stop it.

Of course no one will know for certain what will happen in 2012, at least not until the year 2013, but in the meantime it's always good to prepare for any disaster that might happen then or at any other time. Recent terrorist strikes, natural disasters, and other catastrophes have convinced many to consider how they're prepared to face these things, if they're prepared at all. And of course one can never be too prepared!

So while stockpiling weapons will always be a controversial issue, there is no reason you shouldn't consider stockpiling things like bottled water, canned goods, emergency first aid items, and things like batteries, flashlights, candles, matches, and so on. Many people today are growing their own food just for the sake of their budget, and doing so can mean saving money now while learning how to do this for the future, just in case.

And one thing you can do is consider some more detailed guides that can prepare you for whatever should lie ahead in the future. These guides might let you know the signs of impending disaster and how to protect your home and family just in case. And really, what's wrong with learning these skills no matter what happens? So if the end in 2012 is true, you can be prepared for anything!

British Post Office & Postal Workers Under Attack

The British tabloid press love to lay the blame for every labor dispute, every work-to-rule, every strike and all of industry's woes on the people who actually do the work that produces the wealth.

Take the British Postal Service a public service that has a long tradition of excellence from the days when Queen Victoria was sitting on the throne. Excellence that is, until this Government and the Post Office management decided to start tinkering with it in their stampede to hand all public-owned services to their friends in the private sector.

The press do recognize this time that the Royal Mail management are being intransigent and manipulative in an effort to break the postal workers union, the Communication Workers Union. But they cannot quite lay all the blame on their peers, oh no, it's the workers' fault as well of course.

They are so stubborn, screams the Oligarch-owned London Evening Standard and other British papers almost all singing to the same tune. They won't do more work for less money or accept a reduction in benefits. They refuse to modernize they shout.

Often repeated by the papers are the Post Office's claims about reduced mail volume. Letters are apparently taking a hit at ten-percent a year but in this day of on-line commerce and therefore delivered goods the volumes of small packets and parcels are up.

By modernize the Post Office means privatize of course, but modernize kind of hides from the general public the real reasons for the Government supported stand-off. To NOT modernize sounds so unreasonable of the posties, how dare they live in the past expecting secure and well paid employment. How dare they expect a decent holiday, reasonable work-hours and a pension when they retire. Selfish devils!

Of course the man at the top, Adam Crozier, who wants these reforms manages on a measly £9 million a year, poor dear. That much, would you believe, to run a service that ran very well for decades under the management of public servants.

The British public would do well to protest to their Member of Parliament at what is happening to this essential well-loved institution and the disgraceful way the Communication Workers Union is being treated by the PO management.

Brand India

"My government's endeavour would be to create such an atmosphere in the country that... the talent in the country should work to prove that we are unparalleled in the world." - Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India.

As an Indian, I have been witness to innumerable depictions of India - nation of snake charmers, an insular socialist economy and a resurgent economy. National image is a strategic choice rather than an accident and increasingly important with the increasing interface of the brand India with the world. So what should brand India be to the world? We looked back to look ahead and our study revealed three distinct phases of the evolution of brand India.

Colonial India: exotic, earthy and vibrant with a nationalistic and multicultural personality. However, it remained the land of the snake charmer.

Independent India: socialist, agrarian, austere and largely socialistic. It was seen as narrow minded and insulated.

Resurgent India: a blend of the modern and the traditional. The average Indian is dreaming big with a groundswell of pride seeking social, economic and geopolitical recognition.

As the world acknowledges India's tour de force, brand India is at a cross-road. We can either be a 'soft power' blending tradition with confidence or be arrogant 'hard power' with 'with us or against us' approach.

As government, corporate or individuals we need to either emulate the persona of our biggest role model, Sachin Tendulkar, confident of his expertise but nevertheless a fierce competitor who plays to win but is a picture of dignity and humility which commands respect or display arrogance of our power and invite suspicion and apprehension - a possible trigger for attacks against Indian students in Australia.

Brand India should certainly strive to be a 'soft power' with a focus on equitable & measured growth, value diversity and balance economic power with a deft yet firm geo-politics.

The real measure of success for brand "Incredible India" would be how Indian in general are "valued and welcomed" around the world while India takes its place as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

'Real' Models - Direct From a Town Near You!

The world of modeling is changing. Campaigns based around 'real' women are encouraging a move away from the 'size zero' ideal and the notion that modeling is only open to the super slim, Caucasian, under 20's demographic.

It is becoming very clear that the public appreciate a mix of sizes, ages and races being represented in the media. Classic beauties certainly have their place but we also want to see unique or unusual looks and more people we can relate to on our screens.

With the emergence of programs like 'Colleen's Real Women' and adverts like the 'Dove Campaign For Real Beauty', the public passion on this subject is being noted and acted upon by big players in from within the industry.

Earlier in the year we heard the shocking news that the British edition of Vogue magazine had begun re-touching photos of models to make them appear larger because readers were 'uncomfortable' with some of the images. Recently we saw an increase of ethnic minorities on the Milan runways, and in July the cover of Vogue read 'Ageless Style', bringing the 'age is beauty' debate into the frame.

In her editor's letter for the July edition, Alexandra Shulman says: "What always emerges is that fashion, as you get older, is about confidence, enjoyment and the ability to find a look you feel comfortable with." The new attitude that is emerging appears to be a healthier one, providing more opportunities for plus size and mature models within the fashion industry.

Candles Lit Online Over Tragedy

Candle lighting has been part of tradition. Be it happy occasions or otherwise, candles become the symbol of celebration and hope. Birthday parties will never be complete without the glowing candles on the cake. Wedding proposal and anniversaries would not be as romantic without the glowing light of candles. Candles' light indeed has many meanings. Aside from the happy memories that come with it, candles are ever present in symbolic lightings and historical rallies.

A symbolic candle lighting event has just happened in line with the tragic incident with the Cates family. People across the globe could not contain how the incident took place that left Kimberly Cates dead and her eleven-year old daughter, Jaimie, seriously wounded. Investigators reported that the Cates' home has been forcibly invaded.

And this time, joining hands to express support of the heartbreaking loss are Cates' neighbors and 14,500 other people from all over the world. This momentous event was made possible through virtual candle lighting on a web site that was created for people who want to give their condolences and express their love and support.

The said site was developed by Brett Houle's web development agency. It can be accessed at wearebetterthanthis.com and this is where everybody can light a candle. Houle said that the incident that happened with the Cates family was just so senseless, and having so many people showing support is very emotional. Since the site's launch last Wednesday, people as far as Singapore to Kuwait and Romania have lit candles and left messages for the Cates' family.

Gatherings like this, even though it is only through virtual technology still keeps the fire of hope burning. As what Houle said, simple candle lighting can bridge distance and bring people closer together. This event also is the time for people to be reunited and share the same prayer for justice and peace.

For as long as the candles keep burning, be it in a natural setting or in the virtual world, this planet still has the opportunity to prosper and become a more peaceful and better world. The overflowing support for the Cates family is one good indication that no territorial boundaries, race and even religion matters when it comes to conveying love and denouncing hate and violence.

Living in the Future Past

Living in the Future Past

South Africa pre 1994 was a country under the rule of an oppressive and self-gratifying government. Germany, during the reign of Adolf Hitler, had set an example for this type of governance, for many would be and practicing despots to follow.

For many, memories remain of the tragedy of the never to be forgotten Second World War, with its prejudice, total corruption and abuse of power, designed to protect the privileged few. At the end of this war, the consensus was that something like this would never happen again!

The following years saw the rebuilding of Europe and other damaged parts of the world, but the fine and sincere promises for the future, quickly became forgotten. The greed, prejudices and the corruption, spread even faster and wider, fanned by the opportunities created. The Far East and Africa and the "poor" became breeding grounds for the exponents of human misery and for those who benefited from it. Poverty became a "buzz word", used by many politicians and entrepreneurs to further their own ambitions. The "poor" became the new weapons of their own destruction.

Africa, with its enormous potential of mineral and human resources became a primary target as the influential powers sought further resources for their own ever-increasing needs. The leaders of the people in Africa, became aware of their own power and influence, but most important, the rewards that were theirs for the taking.

Countries such as Rhodesia and South Africa could arguably have been havens of peace and industry. They had their natural resources in minerals and agriculture, the population was generally living in a bygone era, uncorrupted by the outside influences. However, the one point against this idyllic scenario was that the color of the rulers was white! This was exploited to a great degree, by various outside influences, wishing to gain controlling footholds in this continent of plenty. Louder were the voices raised against the ruling regimes and their vocal support for the perceived poor, greater did their influence grow.

Money and aid in various forms, started to pour into Rhodesia and South Africa from a variety of sources and soon, the political war-mongers and arms dealers, left their slime trails, across these magnificent landscapes. The people, or so-called poor of the countries, were the first to suffer. Threatened by their own former neighbors and friends, to join the "liberation" or "freedom" groups, they had no choice. This in turn, led them into conflict with the government forces and they became caught in the snare of the country, which they loved, and was their own.

From this turmoil, rose the African National Congress. Formed in the early nineteen hundreds' and supported in Europe and other parts of the world by various countries and corporations, they created a resemblance of sanity in a country striving to find a direction. Great leaders emerged, none more so than an educated, humanitarian named Nelson Mandela. No person could have envisaged at that time, the effect and inspiration, this one man would have in the future. He led the African National Congress to a conclusion that averted the massacre that had been prophesied. He negotiated the path of reconciliation between the peoples of South Africa, with dignity and compassion and led the country to a position that was unique in the history of the world. The poor of Africa saw in him their salvation.

However, greed is a cancer, whether it is for power, wealth or self-gratification and South Africa was not an exception. With the withdrawal of Nelson Mandela from the political arena, the political vermin seized their opportunity. Their targets were the naive poor, bribed with promises of work, houses and all the other embellishments they had seen and coveted. The politicians, bloated, sleek and shiny from their extravagant style of living, spoke of the wonders they would work for the poor. How they would give the benefits from the struggle to the people and how they would at last be a part of the modern world.

As usual with political promises, the African dream did not materialize. Swarms of people descended on South Africa, fleeing from countries and persecution; seeking the country where the streets were paved with gold. The citizens watched in wonder and in many cases, with hostility. They had observed their leaders living in grandeur; they had heard and read about the scandals emerging and excessive spending. While relatives and friends of those in power wallowed in their unrestricted wealth, the people still did not have work, houses or enough to eat.

The landscape of the country was also changing. Thousands of shacks of all shapes and sizes, made from all forms of materials, grew like mushrooms and became breeding grounds for criminals. Crime had become a scourge and was now a career for anyone willing to take the risk. The police force, now known as the police service, became a source of amusement for all citizens and quickly, a sense of almost despair spread across the nation. Friends of the politicians, convicted of crimes, released on one pretext or another. Culture became another "buzz word" and in the name of culture, President Zuma took more wives and Julius Malema sang a freedom song, "Death to the Boer", meaning, "kill the farmer" and they, with their supporters, danced.

While South Africa weeps and its leaders enrich themselves, some of those watching this devil's tea party, perhaps go back in time to Europe and wonder about the similarity, to that vile and corrupt creation that in the end was its own destruction.

I have been writing for almost two years, but have lived in South Africa for over thirty years. During that time, I have seen like many other here, changes for the good and bad of the country. However, there have never been changes that affected the ordinary citizen, or the poor. I though I would write something about this; probably not believing it will make a difference, but to make me feel better, seeing it in words. If it induces any emotion in you; either positive or negative, I would like to know about it.

UN Says that Humans Must Use Less and Conserve

UN Says that Humans Must Use Less and Conserve

The United Nations, and specifically The Habitat for Humanity research project has for many decades gone out of its way to promote a world without poverty, hunger, and or disease. Occasionally they suggest that it is too hard to feed people in rural areas, and therefore people should live in the city where things are more efficient, and the distribution chain is set up properly. Yet, at other times they complain about the urban slums around the world, and it is true they are significant, disgusting, and a slap in the face of all humanity could be - thus need to be fixed.

Nevertheless, it often appears that the United Nations and the other NGOs they work with are living in hypocrisy, as anytime there is a crisis or event anywhere in the world the United Nations stands up and says; "we must fix this" - and yet everything they do turns into the law of unintended consequences, often making it worse. Even a relatively minor crisis is turned into a global media event of epic proportions. Do you remember; about 10 years ago the United Nations claimed that there would be 50 billion people on the planet by 2075, and 2100 by the latest?

That doesn't seem to be happening, and yet it is scare tactics like that, plus all the scare tactics used by the global warming alarmists which keep the United Nations in place as a global authority. However it's not and one only has to look at history to see their incredible mistakes and problems. The United Nations is no better than the League of Nations was, and if you'll recall that also led to a disaster in human history. Are we doomed to repeat?

There was a very interesting article recently in TerraDaily Online News titled; "Humanity Can and Must Do More with Less," by Staff Writers in New York and Nairobi Kenya which was published on May 16, 2011. The article stated; "By 2050, humanity could consume an estimated 140 billion tons of minerals, ores, fossil fuels and biomass per year - three times its current appetite - unless the economic growth rate is "decoupled" from the rate of natural resource consumption, warns a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme."

Now all those big numbers might sound like a huge problem, and it's not that human beings shouldn't conserve their resources, they obviously should work towards being that most efficient as possible at everything they do. After all, conservation makes sense, efficiency makes sense, but to somehow suggest that we need to limit production, or "force" humans to use less is silly, and the United Nations report doesn't seem to project the reality that humans always find a different way to do something when one particular resource runs out, or the technology moves the ball forward.

We don't use steam engines anymore, and who's to say we will use gasoline or diesel powered reciprocating engines of the future - in 100 years or more? Technology will fix many of these problems that the United Nations and others call an impending crisis. And, it is my view that it is somewhat ridiculous to have a global organization that has made so many mistakes in the past, tell us all how to live into the future. Sometimes it's best when decision-makers just get out of the way of free markets, and let the capitalism do its magic. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Guatemala Civilian Security Patrols

Guatemala Civilian Security Patrols

The Municipality of Panajachel has recently issued a bulletin, "Organización Comunitaria para la Convivencia y Seguridad en al Municipio de Panajachel." It is intended to explain something of the history and reasons for the creating the Security Commission and the Security Patrols. Because much of the foreign colony in Panajachel has not been fully aware of the reasons for these developments, we offer this additional information.

THE PROBLEM

Over the past five years extortions and kidnappings have increased dramatically throughout the Department of Sololá. Guatemalans living in Panajachel recall hearing of someone being kidnapped every few days. A general feeling of fear has grown as many wondered who would be next. Because they were little involved, the extent of this development has been unrecognized by many in the foreign colony. Few foreigners have been targets of extortion or kidnapping and most of their contacts are with others who are equally uninvolved.

The fact is, however, that Panajachel has been invaded by criminal elements. The lack of funds and corruption at the national level has made it impossible to provide an adequate number of police officers for the town. Only recently (March 2011) the Vice-Minister of Government and the National Chief of Police promised to assign three additional radio patrol cars, four police motorcycles and additional police to Panajachel.

Much of the criminal activity is related to the activities of G........... M........... who has been widely recognized as a leader among the those operating in Panajachel. The wide network of his accomplices and those controlled by him is also well known. Legal action is seldom taken against them because under Guatemalan law, their crimes have to be proven. Witnesses fearing reprisals consistently refuse to testify. Thus many of those captured go free the next day.

Although kidnappings have diminished in frequency, they have continued until recently. Even in February of this year a member of a major kidnapping ring in the Department of Sololá was captured in Panajachel in a candle shop near the market. At this time here are fourteen or fifteen members of this ring that remain at large.

THE MUNICIPAL SECURITY COMMISSION

The growing criminal activity in Panajachel led concerned citizens to revive dormant the Comisión Municipal de Convivencia y Seguridad Ciudadana de Panajachel, hereafter to be referred to as the Commission.

In August of 2010 an officer of the Ministry of Government in collaboration with the national police in Sololá held a workshop to evaluate the worst problems in Panajachel. It concluded that a major problem was drugs and that the police and the judicial system were unable to deal with it. It was decided to revive a commission on security that had been formed in 2008. At this time a new First Officer of the National Police arrived to help rid the local police station of corrupt officers.

In this reorganized Commission Vice-Mayor Edgar Rodas was named as President and direct representative of the Municipal Council; Juan Manuel Ralón as Vice-President; Teresa Coello as Secretary; and Marina Ben as Treasurer. The mandate of the Commission was extremely broad. It has collaborated with the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala to provide psychological counseling to those suffering from traumas during Tropical Storm Agatha and brought psychologists in to provide wellbeing workshops to groups of adolescents.

In order to establish a digital surveillance system to help detect criminal activity, in November of 2010 Commission members traveled to Pachalum for a tour of their digital security system that won an international award for the use of technology to provide security. By December of 2010, the Commission was able to obtain a camera and conducted a demonstration of how a digital security system can deter crime and provide evidence against criminals. During this period it became clear that in order to have a fully functioning 24 hour system, cameras, monitors and computers would be necessary. Financial support for the purchase of these key security elements is presently being sought.

THE MUNICIPAL PATROLS

Beginnings of the Patrols:

In 2010, when Tropical Storm Agatha began, residents of the Callejón Las Armonías vowed to not let a neighbors drown or get trapped in a mudslide. Leaders of the sector worked to relocate families until the danger from the landslides had subsided. During the confusion dealing with the damage, there was a significant surge of criminal activity. To cope with this, members of the neighborhood organized voluntary patrols to protect themselves. This idea quickly spread to the other sectors of Panajachel.

Patrol Organization.

The volunteer security patrols are officially sponsored by the Municipal Security Commission. The COCODE presidents (community development leaders) in Panajachel appoint a Coordinator of each patrol. Depending on the size of the sector, there may be a number of patrols. A patrol is composed of teams of ten to fifteen volunteer men and women who work on different nights. They are in no sense vigilantes. Currently, there are fourteen patrols in Panajachel. Their activities begin at 11 o'clock at night but cannot be carried out during the day because all the members are volunteers and have other responsibilities. The patrols work under the supervision of the Commission and directly with the national police as well as with each other.

Funding.

Because there has been no external funding available, patrol members have equipped themselves with personal flashlights and with radios to communicate with one another. These personal radios are not state-of-the-art equipment. As such, would-be criminals often intercept communication and thus avoid detection and apprehension. Recently a community member donated four new radios, and the Municipality has agreed to supply all the patrols with 30 additional radios.

The Use of Face Covering.

That the patrol members often use ski masks and other face coverings has also been criticized. Initially, patrols went without any facial covering. Due to the inefficiency of the legal and judicial system, suspects were often released within 24 hours and would seek revenge on the people they had seen capture them. Before patrollers wore masks thieves would observe who was patrolling on which nights in order to target that individual's house knowing that it would be unprotected. A goal of the Commission is to provide identifying vests and caps for all members of the patrol groups to better distinguish them from someone who may be using a mask for more nefarious reasons.

Dunking in the River.

One practice of the patrols that has made some people particularly unhappy has been the dunking of people in the river. This is a practice that has been developed to control people who become violent while awaiting the police to formally arrest them. It is not authorized by the Commission. When called at night, the police often do not arrive for over an hour, or may not arrive at all. During this time, some suspects, often under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, become violent, making them difficult to control. Washing in the river helps to sober up and calm them. Volunteers have escorted drunken youths home after midnight. In several cases, when a youth has been caught attempting a crime, he has been taken to his home to let his parents administer discipline instead of turning him over to the police, where there would be little opportunity for rehabilitation.

Motor Patrols.

The patrols have received material support through the Commission's practice of providing nightly motor patrols. The Commission members provide their own vehicles and pay for their own gasoline. Among their efforts was the prevention of the rape of a woman in February and stopping the lynching of G........... M........... when angry townspeople captured him after his involvement in a local robbery became known. They have also helped the police to arrest suspected criminals in a timely manner. The motor patrols activity should be strengthened when the recent promise by the Ministry of Government to provide support to the national police in Panajachel with patrol cars, motorcycles, and additional police personnel is fulfilled.

NEEDS

The people of Panajachel are tired of continuously feeling insecure even in their own homes. The work of the Municipal Security Commission and the voluntary patrols has been welcomed by the population as a whole. However, more support is needed in order to better identify the patrol groups with appropriate jackets or vests. Now that the rainy season will be starting, appropriate outerwear that still identifies them as official members of the patrol group is necessary.

As the Commission and the patrols continue to focus their efforts on making Panajachel safe, we urge you to be supportive of these members of our community who sacrifice their time and money to maintain the peace and order for the benefit of all residents of our town. If you would like to contribute money to cover fuel costs, identifying vests and caps, radios and flashlights it will be much appreciated. They also appreciate your support if you are willing to make a pot of coffee and offer a basket of bread. Cameras, computer systems, and TV monitors are also needed for ensuring the function of a digital surveillance system.

Mamta and Gandhi

Mamta and Gandhi

Ms Mamata took oath of office after her party Trinmool Congress's land slide victory as Chief Minister of West Bengal. She stands for people's welfare and has defeated CPM on the promise of good governance, end of CPM cadre's menacing activities, freeing police from obligation to CPM's dictates and ensuring general welfare of masses through increased industrial activity.

India's GDP growth relies on the performance in four southern states, two western states and three northern states. The hinterland represented by UP, Bihar, Rajasthan and MP have been dragging it so far. West Bengal also was poorly performing state inspite of having potential. Since the change of guard in Bihar, its contribution is now getting better, a similar possibility can be seen in case of West Bengal now.

This is how India's march towards becoming a developed nation will be achieved but the states of UP also has to see a change in leadership to come back to its old glory when likes of Govind Vallabh Pant and C B Gupta were in leadership. MP and Rajsthan will catch sooner or later because there is silent progress going on. Gujrat is in path-breaking mould under Modi. Its past 10yrs GDP growth has exceeded the 10pc average. This is no ordinary achievement and the service, manufacturing as well agriculture have contributed to the GDP growth. On social parameters also Gujrat stands apart.

I have given the above narrative only to convey to you that India's progress has momentum and will not be retarded just because of the inflation and high interest rates. These may be seen as a threat but last ten years of fine performance have seen both fluctuating without denting much. Now, since the voting age is only 18 years and the youth who are in the voting age have become matured in a different India. That's why the political scene. Is changing fast and cast leaders are being sidelined all over the country. This political maturity of the nation is going to translate into faster progress on all fronts.

I saw some parallels between Gandhi and Mamta. Mamta was physically hurt and manhandled in the beginning of her carrier like Gandhi was in South Africa. Gandhi. Came to adopt the living style of common citizens of that time before embarking on full scale political journey. Mamta never shed the living like commoners even after having grown taller after grabbing formal power as minister. Gandhi opposed salt tax and thereby challenged govt's authority, Mamta did it by taking up cause of unwilling farmers to surrender their lands under govt's dictates and thereby challenging govt of West Bengal. Her language of communicating with masses remained Bengali and Gandhi adopted Hindi. Both had effective communication with masses.

The difference between the two is that one was accepted because he came down from high pedestal and Mamta came to be more accepted after climbing up a few notches. Gandhi refused to take power directly in his own hands, Mamta has decided to take it wholly in her own hands. Gandhi philosophized much, Mamta has no flair for it. Gandhi had command over English, Mamta has just workable knowledge of English. Gandhi had respect of all, even those who he was fighting against. Mamta can not claim the same and does not command any respect of her adversaries. Gandhi was helped by the industrialists and the rich people of India, Mamta has been seen as an enemy by them.

I appreciate Mamta's political caliber but she has yet to achieve the status of successful leader who delivers on ground. If she is able to check corruption and keep law and order in good shape, I think she will have achieved every thing because rest will naturally follow. The central govt like wise has a similar duty ie to keep nation secured internally and externally and to simplify the legal framework so as not leave any scope for corruption besides ensuring a mechanism to catch and punish the corrupt. The judicial reforms are another area that requires to be attended to. . .

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Subduing the Brown Emperor

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Subduing the Brown Emperor

I must first admit to my general ignorance about the details of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), but I do know it works and have relied on its low-impact holistic approach numerous times. In TCM, diagnosis is based on a holistic understanding of the inner kingdom of the human body.

In a metaphorical sense, the elements of TCM are like warriors or sages, invited into your kingdom to rid it of troublesome invaders. Recently my inner kingdom suffered just such an invasion, and it was surmised that perhaps my Spleen Qi was sinking and I had a deficiency of Kidney Yang. Imagine my surprise and I just thought I had the runs, but unfortunately I had used the last anti-diarrhea tablet long ago. I turned to TCM for relief.

Many expats have a supply chain of items which they believe are essential to their everyday survival. When traveling to China, tourists are urged to bring, along with an electrical converter, common toiletries such as cold and digestive medications, lip balm, sanitary napkins and over-the-counter medicines. But these supplies are quickly depleted if you are a long-term resident. Just how many packages of Imodium A-D and Tylenol can you squeeze into two suitcases when packing for a move to China?

Most people are unfortunately familiar with the affliction of travelers' diarrhea, which goes by many names, depending upon the country recently visited. After an exhausting siege of my inner kingdom I coined the boiling guts affliction - the "Brown Emperor" due to its merciless domination of my every waking minute. The Brown Emperor has a small but crucial domain - the bowels and digestive tract, and when he is in residence you suffer mightily from his abdominal tyranny. When the Brown Emperor ascended, neither Pepto nor Kaopectate had I. The time had come to enlist the help of TCM.

To paraphrase Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky, the time has come to talk of many things, of Five Elements, Yin-Yang and Inner Heat, cabbages and kings. The goal of Chinese Traditional Medicine is to restore balance to the human body. Just as the physical world is composed of land, sea and air, in TCM the human landscape is composed of Qi, Moisture and Blood. Qi is the animating force that flows through all things (defining Qi can take thousands of pages). Moisture protects and lubricates all tissue (water is wet). Blood is the basic foundation of bones, nerves, skin, muscles and internal organs (blood is thicker than water).

The medicine needs to be taken regularly, and just like in America, some medicines are taken with food and some before bed. I took the small packets of TCM twice a day and the effect lasted longer and longer each time until after three days, the symptoms disappeared and the problem was solved. Many medicines may have an unfamiliar or unpleasant flavor - sorry no bubblegum, cherry or grape. TCM also lives up to the old adage the worse it tastes the more potent it is.

In the end (pun intended), I discovered the path to good health begins with the mind. From now on at the first sign of the Brown Emperor, I will start the fight with my ever increasing supply of TCM. But I pray I do not develop a fever while in the countryside, as I have recently learned of a potent TCM "cure". The older generation sometimes uses a tincture made with cockroach poop to bring down a fever. The mere threat of such a vile brew would be enough to cure me instantly of any complaints, although I admit I have a morbid desire to witness the collection process.

Diseases in Africa

Diseases in Africa

Africa like other continents of the world has its share of diseases. Some of the most common diseases in Africa include malaria. Some of the risk areas include Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe among others. Malaria is a deadly disease that has claimed many lives in Africa. It is spread by the female anopheles mosquito and this occurs when it bites and sucks blood. These mosquitoes are on the loose in the evening and at night. It is advisable for people to sleep under mosquito nets and clear the bleeding grounds for these mosquitoes. Travelers to these countries must always take malaria preventive drugs.

Another common disease in Africa is Yellow Fever and it is prevalent in Sudan, Angola, and Zaire. The local people have developed resistance to this disease though travelers need to take the necessary measures. They need to be vaccinated against the Yellow Fever and they will get a certificate. This certificate is presented along with the other travel documents. This vaccination is given to children older than nine months as well as adults. Children less than four months are however not immunized as well as people who are allergic to eggs as it may be detrimental to their health. Expectant mothers must also not be vaccinated against the Yellow Fever.

Cholera makes another of the common diseases in Africa and it is prominent in the southern African countries. This disease is prone in areas where there is poor sanitation. Travelers must be vaccinated against this disease especially those that are on anti acid therapy and those with stomach ulcers. Cholera is a preventable disease and people must eat thoroughly cooked foods. Fruits must be handled with hygiene and drinking water must always be boiled. Infants under the age of six months as well as expectant mothers must not be vaccinated against cholera. Since the vaccine is only 50% effective, it is important to observe the preventive measures.

Diseases in Africa also include the Typhoid Fever, which is most popular in South African countries. It is most concentrated in the rural areas as well as the smaller cities. Typhoid is a contaminated food and water disease and people must always ensure that the food and water they are taking are clean and free from disease. Food must be thoroughly cooked and drinking water must either be boiled or bottled. Vaccinations against this disease are available and they are up to 90% effective. It is important to note that a typhoid vaccination is not necessary for international travel.

The Dengue Fever is another of the most common diseases in Africa and is most common in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Swaziland. It is an epidemic disease and people are more exposed to it during the epidemic season. The dengue fever does not have a known vaccine and people must stay away from the mosquitoes that spread it. Mosquitoes that carry the Dengue Fever bite people during the day and it is important to avoid areas that are infested by them. The risk posed by the Dengue Fever is however small though people have to be careful.
